DigiLocker:
DigiLocker is one of the key initiatives under Digital India Programme, implemented by Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), Government of India.
DigiLocker aims at 'Digital Empowerment' of citizen by providing citizens a cloud platform for storage, sharing, issuance and verification of documents/certificates in digital format. The thrust of DigiLocker is to promote the vision of paperless governance, thus enabling any citizen to produce requisite documents anytime, anywhere in legally acceptable electronic form. This enables citizens to seamlessly share certificates/documents in various electronic applications without carrying physical copies. The issued documents in DigiLocker system are deemed to be at par with original physical documents as per Rule 9A of the Information Technology (Preservation and Retention of Information by Intermediaries providing Digital Locker. facilities) Rules, 2016 notified on February 8, 2017 vide G.S.R. 711(E). Departments/Organisations that get registered with DigiLocker as “Issuer Organisation” can provide electronic copies of documents and certificates issued by them (e.g. Driving License, Voter ID Card, Certificates issued by Universities and Govt. departments, Permits issued by different departments etc.)
Digilocker provides 1GB storage space to each account to upload scanned copies of legacy documents.
